Family documents series, 1695-1899.

Papers consist of correspondence, financial and estate records, genealogical material, legal documents and property records, pamphlets, vestry records, and other items. Correspondence (1728-1903, bulk 19th century) consists mainly of Civil War letters from Thomas Porcher Ravenel (member of the Charleston Light Dragoons) to his wife Elizabeth, but also includes post-war family letters, and several colonial era letters of the Ravenel and Mazyck families. Financial records include receipts (1850-1899) and cotton sales accounts (1854-1859) of Thomas P. Ravenel (1824-1898), a receipt book (1823-1854) of Henry Ravenel, and slave mortgages. Legal documents include bonds, indentures, and a marriage settlement. Property records consist of land grants, conveyances, plats, and other items. Genealogical material includes a handwritten volume belonging to Thomas P. Ravenel, Jr. (1850-1936) entitled "Compend of Family Record: Wilson, Chisolm, Fraser, Mazyck, and other Huguenot Lines, compiled from full records in possession of Rev. Robert Wilson." Vestry records of St. John's Parish consist of excerpts (1753-1808) of vestry meeting minutes. Pamphlets (1831-1915) mainly concern the history, people, climate, and agriculture of St. John's Berkeley Parish. Other items include the wills of Rene Ravenel (1762-1822) and other family members; reminiscences (1903) about Pooshee Plantation at Christmas by Samuel W. Ravenel; a travel diary (1803) attributed to Stephen Ravenel; an account book (1888-1902) for contributions to Black Oak Church; a copy of "The Confederate Soldier's Pocket Manual of Devotions (1863); a broadside (ca. 1860) entitled "Epitaph on the United States of America"; a report (1860) on a meeting of citizens establishing a Vigilance Committee of St. John's Parish; accounts and receipts (1851-1852) of the Southern Rights Association of St. John's Berkeley and St. Stephen's Parish; a roster book (1852-1854) for the Middleton St. John's militia company; a list (1856) of contributors aiding South Carolinians immigrating to Kansas; and notes on nullification.

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies. Thomas Porcher Ravenel (1850-1936) was born in Pinopolis, South Carolina. He was a prominent lawyer in Savannah and was a partner of Rufus Ezekiel Lester in the firm Lester & Ravenel. For a time, William Livingston Kenan of Darien, Georgia, was also a partner, during which period the firm's name was Lester, Ravenel & Kenan.
